GSW celebrates ribbon cutting and grand opening for newly renovated James Earl Carter Library

AMERICUS, Ga. (Oct. 30, 2025) – Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) celebrated a major milestone on Friday, October 17, with a ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony for the newly renovated James Earl Carter Library.

The event drew a crowd of campus and community members, including University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor Sonny Perdue, DVM, State Senator Freddie Powell Sims, State Representative Mike Cheokas, Kim and Jana Carter — granddaughters of the library’s namesake — and hundreds of GSW faculty, staff and students.

Constructed in 1971 and dedicated in 1973, the James Earl Carter Library was named in honor of the father of former President Jimmy Carter, who was then Governor of Georgia.

For more than 50 years, the Carter Library has stood as an academic cornerstone for the GSW campus, serving five generations of students who have pursued knowledge, discovery and opportunity within its walls.

“Today, we celebrate the next chapter in that legacy,” said GSW President Michelle Johnston, Ph.D. “This transformation breathes new life into a space that has long been at the heart of our campus. With state-of-the-art technology, open and collaborative study areas, and resources designed to foster student success, this modernized library will once again become a destination for all GSW students.”

The renovation — the first major update since the building’s original construction — encompasses 63,270 square feet and represents a $6.2 million investment, including $5 million in state funding in Georgia’s FY2024 budget, championed by GSW’s legislative delegation.

Chancellor Perdue emphasized the Library renovation is an investment in Georgia’s future, providing students with spaces that inspire collaboration and creativity. Senator Sims praised the project as a model partnership in higher education, and Representative Cheokas noted it stands as a symbol of progress and pride for both students and the Americus community.

Johnston shared that student leaders were given a sneak peek ahead of the opening and were immediately impressed by the transformation. “This is our academic weapon,” one student said. “This was so worth the wait,” said another.

“This building was renovated with our students in mind,” Johnston added. “We hope they feel proud of what has been created here for them and for future generations of Hurricanes. Today, we don't just cut a ribbon. We open doors to countless futures yet to be written. Welcome to the next chapter of the James Earl Carter Library.”

The renovation was made possible through the collective efforts of many individuals and partners. GSW extends its gratitude to Chancellor Sonny Perdue, the Board of Regents, Governor Brian Kemp, and the legislative delegation — Senator Sims and Representatives Cheokas and Patty Marie Stinson — for supporting this vital investment in higher education.

GSW also recognized the outstanding collaboration of McMillan | Pazdan | Smith Architecture and Garbutt Construction for bringing the university’s vision to life. Vice President for Business and Finance Jeff Hall, Director of Auxiliary Services and Special Projects Jenn Smith and Director of Physical Plant Joe Castongia were acknowledged for their leadership and coordination throughout the project. Appreciation was also extended to Interim Dean of Academic Affairs Rachel Abbott, Ph.D., and Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Gaye Hayes, Ph.D., for ensuring the space supports the academic and social needs of students. Director of Library Services John Wilson and his dedicated team were recognized for their flexibility and commitment to maintaining library operations throughout the renovation process.
