As another academic year draws to a close at Georgia Southwestern State University, I find myself reflecting with deep gratitude and pride, both in what we've accomplished together and in what lies ahead for our students, our campus, and our community.
This semester has been one of momentum. Our enrollment continues to climb, and this year, we were once again honored with the Chancellor's Cup for the highest percentage enrollment growth among state universities in the University System of Georgia. That recognition is more than a statistic. It's a testament to the belief that students and families have in the value of a Georgia Southwestern education.
Across campus, that momentum has been evident in the many awards ceremonies and celebrations recognizing the achievements of our students, faculty, and staff. These moments remind us that success is not accidental. It is the result of hard work, perseverance, and a shared commitment to excellence.
At Georgia Southwestern, we make three promises to every student who chooses to call this place home.
First, we promise to challenge them. Our students are pushed academically, encouraged to think critically, and prepared to meet the demands of an ever-changing workforce. Inside our classrooms, learning is active and rooted in real-world application.
Second, we promise to support them. At GSW, that support extends far beyond the classroom. It's found in our dedicated faculty and staff, in the friendships students build, and in the broader Americus community that embraces them. From campus resources to local churches and community partners, our students are surrounded by the Americus-Sumter County "village"—a network of people invested in their success and well-being.
Finally, we promise to engage them. A GSW education is not confined to lectures and textbooks. Our students bring their talents and passions to life through experiences that connect them to the world around them. Whether it's contributing to the recently released second edition of Blue Fire, our student literary publication, volunteering during The Big Event house build for a local family, or participating in countless campus and community initiatives, our students are learning by doing and making an impact along the way.
Now, we turn our attention to one of the most meaningful traditions of the academic year—commencement. On Thursday, May 7, we will celebrate the accomplishments of approximately 320 graduates during two ceremonies at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. as they cross the stage and step into the next chapter of their lives. It is always one of the most inspiring days on our campus, not only for our students and their families, but for all of us who have had the privilege of being part of their journey.
And the celebration continues on Friday, May 8 from 6 to 10 p.m., as we invite the community to join us for Hailstorm, Athletics' largest fundraiser event. This high-energy evening features music, food, drinks, and the excitement of our signature helicopter golf ball drop, where guests have the chance to win big money. There is still time to purchase tickets at gsw.edu/HailStorm, and we would love to see you there as we come together to celebrate and support Georgia Southwestern.
As we reflect on this academic year, it is clear that the strength of our university is deeply connected to the strength of our community. Thank you for believing in our students, supporting our mission, and being an essential part of what makes Georgia Southwestern so special!
