Georgia Southwestern ranks among Top Public Universities in the South

AMERICUS, Ga. (Sept. 28, 2026) – Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) has once again earned national recognition, ranking #49 among Top Public Universities in the South in U.S. News and World Report’s 2027 Best Colleges list.

GSW also climbed 25 spots to #37 among Top Performers on Social Mobility, which measures how successfully universities enroll and graduate students receiving federal Pell Grants, generally awarded to students with significant financial need. GSW is one of only four Georgia universities ranked among the top 50 in its social mobility category.

Overall, GSW is recognized on seven U.S. News & World Report 2027 Best Colleges lists: Top Public Schools, Top Performers on Social Mobility, Best Regional Universities in the South, Best Undergraduate Business Programs, Best Undergraduate Computer Science Programs, Best Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Programs and Best Undergraduate Psychology Programs.

The annual U.S. News Best Colleges rankings compare more than 1,700 four-year colleges and universities across the country. GSW is classified as a Regional University in the South, a category that groups institutions by their academic mission and geographic region. The Top Public Universities ranking identifies the highest-performing public institutions within that category.

U.S. News evaluates universities using up to 17 measures of academic quality and student success, with more than half of the overall score based on student outcomes. Factors include graduation and retention rates, graduation performance, social mobility, post-graduation earnings, student-faculty ratios, faculty resources, financial resources and assessments of academic quality by higher education leaders. For 2027, U.S. News added earnings by academic major as a measure of graduate outcomes.

The rankings align with several recent indicators of GSW’s progress in student success, access and career preparation. The University reached a record enrollment of 4,017 students in Fall 2025, marking its third consecutive year of record enrollment, while also earning University System of Georgia (USG) recognition for improvements in student retention. GSW offers more than 85 academic programs with a 17:1 student-to-faculty ratio, providing students with access to personalized instruction and support.

Outcomes after graduation are also among GSW’s strengths. USG data ranks GSW fourth among its institutions in median earnings for graduates employed in Georgia one year after graduation. Approximately 80% of GSW graduates remain in Georgia, contributing their skills and education to the state’s workforce and communities.

The U.S. News recognition follows another recent national ranking highlighting GSW’s role in expanding educational opportunity. In August, Washington Monthly ranked GSW No. 3 in the nation among its Best Colleges for Rural America, a ranking that considers factors including social mobility, affordability, service to rural students and preparation of graduates for high-demand careers.

Together, these measures reflect GSW’s continued emphasis on providing an accessible, affordable education that supports students through graduation and prepares them for success beyond the classroom.
