GSW and SGTC strengthen partnership to expand student transfer opportunities

AMERICUS, Ga. (Oct. 29, 2026) — Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) and South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) have strengthened their longstanding partnership through a new articulation agreement designed to create a smoother transition for students pursuing bachelor's degrees and expand access to higher education in Southwest Georgia.

The agreement, signed on Oct. 26 by GSW President Kerry Palmer, Ph.D., and SGTC President John Watford, Ed.D., establishes clear transfer pathways for students completing eligible coursework or associate degree programs at SGTC who wish to continue their education at GSW. By identifying transferable courses and aligning academic requirements between the two institutions, the partnership helps students maximize previously earned credits, avoid unnecessary duplication of coursework and make continued progress toward their educational and career goals.

“We are very excited to welcome students from South Georgia Technical College into our campus community,” said Palmer. “This partnership reflects our shared commitment to expanding educational opportunities while recognizing the time, hard work and resources students have already invested in their education. By providing a clear pathway to a bachelor’s degree, we’re helping students achieve their goals, increase their earning potential and strengthen the skilled workforce our region needs.”

The agreement outlines transfer opportunities across several high-demand academic fields, including:

  • Business Administration: Students completing eligible coursework in SGTC's accounting and marketing programs can apply credits toward GSW's Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
  • Information Technology: Students in SGTC's computer programming, computer support specialist and networking specialist programs can transfer designated coursework toward GSW's Bachelor of Science in Information Technology.
  • Elementary Education: Students completing SGTC's Associate of Science in Education can apply eligible credits toward GSW's Bachelor of Science in Education in Elementary Education.
  • Nursing: Registered nurses who have completed SGTC's Associate of Science in Nursing program can apply eligible credits toward GSW's RN-to-BSN program.

In addition to these program-specific pathways, the agreement identifies general education courses that transfer between the institutions, including coursework in mathematics, communication, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.

"South Georgia Tech is excited to continue to partner with Georgia Southwestern on this new opportunity for students to have a seamless education and career path,” said Watford.   The spirit of cooperation and tireless efforts to remove barriers for students, demonstrated by both SGTC and GSW, is essential to making the connection between education, personal growth, and a lifelong career."

As part of the agreement, both institutions will collaborate on student recruitment, admissions, academic advising and communication to help prospective transfer students better understand available pathways and requirements. The partnership also encourages students to work closely with academic advisors at both institutions to ensure a successful transition.

The agreement is effective from Fall 2026 through Spring 2031 and reinforces the institutions' shared commitment to expanding educational opportunities, supporting workforce development and keeping talented graduates in Southwest Georgia.
