Georgia Southwestern honors late Brenton Truitt with posthumous degree during Homecoming

AMERICUS, Ga. (Nov. 3, 2026) — Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) honored the life and legacy of the late Brenton Truitt of Americus, Georgia, by awarding him a posthumous Bachelor of Business Administration in Management degree during GSW’s Homecoming festivities on Saturday, Oct. 17. His parents, Charles (’90, ’95) and Floria Truitt (’06), both GSW alumni, accepted the degree on his behalf during a special halftime presentation at the Homecoming soccer game.

A management major in GSW's College of Business and Computing and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Brenton was remembered as a dedicated student and respected campus leader whose impact extended beyond the classroom. His determination to complete his education was deeply rooted in his family's longstanding connection to GSW and his desire to honor the memory of his older brother, Brandon, who passed away in January 2022.

“Brenton's story is one of perseverance, family and the lasting impact of a Georgia Southwestern education,” said GSW President Kerry J. Palmer, Ph.D. “Despite tremendous personal loss, he remained committed to completing his degree and honoring his brother's memory. We are proud to recognize his accomplishments and hope this degree serves as a lasting tribute to Brenton and the remarkable legacy the Truitt family has built at GSW.”

The Truitt family's GSW legacy spans two generations. Charles earned his bachelor's degree in education in 1990 and master's degree in 1995, while Floria earned her bachelor's degree in special education in 2006. Their sons followed in their footsteps, with Brandon enrolling in 2014 and Brenton joining him on campus in 2016.

Both brothers were members of Omega Psi Phi, following in the footsteps of their father, who joined the fraternity in 1988. Brenton continued that tradition when he was initiated into the Delta Delta Delta chapter, fulfilling a goal he had shared with his brother.

“My brother Brandon was a big part of why I ended up at GSW,” Brenton shared in the 2024 Aeolian Family Tradition feature highlighting the family's legacy. “He allowed me to see that this is a prestigious school, and continuing the legacy of my parents was very important to us.”

Following Brandon's passing, Brenton found renewed motivation to pursue his education, re-enrolling at GSW in Fall 2022. Despite the challenges of losing his brother, he excelled academically, earning recognition on both the Dean's List and Academic Achievement List.

“It was very difficult to focus on college sometimes with my brother being gone, but having a strong support system from my family allowed me to excel in honor of my brother,” Brenton shared in the 2024 feature. “I want to continue our family legacy here by being a great leader and impacting GSW in a positive way.”

Although Brenton's life was cut short, his determination, academic accomplishments and commitment to his family and fraternity left a lasting impression on the GSW community. His posthumous degree honors not only his educational journey but also the legacy of two brothers whose love for Georgia Southwestern and each other continues to inspire those who knew them.

Brenton will be remembered for his infectious smile, laughter and love for his family, community and Omega brothers. His recognition during Homecoming served as a meaningful reminder that the bonds formed at Georgia Southwestern extend far beyond the classroom and last a lifetime.
