Registered Student Organization Policies

A. Non-Discrimination

Membership and all privileges, including voting and officer positions, must be extended to all students without regard to race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender orientation, gender expression, ethnicity or national origin, religion, age, genetic information, disability, or veteran status. Membership and all privileges, including voting and officer positions, must be extended to all students as stated in the Georgia Southwestern State University Non-Discrimination Statement.

 

B. Sexual Harassment

A registered student organization will not engage in any activity that is unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that creates a hostile environment.  Behaviors that could create a hostile environment include sexual harassment (which could include inappropriate sexual comments), sexual misconduct, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking. C. Hazing

A registered student organization will not initiate, support, or encourage any events or situations that recklessly, by design, or intentionally endanger the mental or physical health or safety of a student for any purpose including but not limited to initiation or admission into or affiliation with any student group or organization. D. Alcohol

A registered organization agrees when holding any function it shall establish precautionary measures at the function to ensure that alcoholic beverages are not served to persons under the legal drinking age, to persons who appear intoxicated, or to persons known to be addicted to intoxicants. E. Responsibility to Report

When an organization advisor becomes aware of conduct described in the Sexual Harassment Policy, Hazing Policy, of Non-Discrimination Policy, he/she is responsible to report it immediately to one of the following individuals:

  • Coordinator of Student Rights and Responsibilities,
  • Director of Residential and Campus Life,
  • University’s Title IX Coordinator, or
  • Executive Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management

 

F. Commercial Activity

A registered student organization may only sell goods or products directly related to the student organization’s mission and purpose.  Approval for such sales must come from the Office of Residential and Campus Life prior to their sale. G. GSW Licensed Logos

Use of GSW licensed logos for events, promotions, clothing, and other related activity are subject to approval by the Office of Marketing and Communication. For detailed information, visit University Relations.

 

H. Posting Policy

A registered student organization must gain approval for posting and distribution of organization's information. No signs or flyers are to be posted on building exteriors, glass or painted surfaces, wood or plaster walls, fixtures, or in any place or manner that defaces the surface used or makes the removal of the material difficult. Greek Organizations should obtain approval from the Greek Life Coordinator. Non-Greek RSOs should obtain approval from the Student Activities Coordinator.

 

I. Student Organization Responsibility for Drug Abuse

The use of marijuana, controlled substances, or other illegal or dangerous drugs constitutes a serious threat to the public health, welfare, and academic achievement of students enrolled in the University System of Georgia (USG). Therefore, all student organizations, including but not limited to societies, fraternities, sororities, clubs, and similar groups of students which are affiliated with, recognized by, or which use the facilities under the jurisdiction of USG institutions, are responsible for enforcing compliance with local, state, and federal laws by all persons attending or participating in their respective functions and affairs, social or otherwise.

As provided by the Student Organization Responsibility for Drug Abuse Act, any such student organization which, through its officers, agents, or responsible members, knowingly permits, authorizes, or condones the manufacture, sale, distribution, possession, serving, consumption or use of marijuana, controlled substances, or other illegal or dangerous drugs at any affair, function, or activity of such student organization, social or otherwise, violates the laws of this State and, after being afforded the constitutional requirements of due process, shall have its recognition as a student organization withdrawn and shall be expelled from the campus for a minimum of one calendar year from the date of determination of guilt.

Such organization shall also be prohibited from using any property or facilities of the institution for a period of at least one year. Any lease, rental agreement, or other document between the Board of Regents or the institution and the student organization that relates to the use of the property leased, rented, or occupied shall be terminated for the student organization knowingly having permitted or authorized the unlawful actions described above.

All sanctions imposed by this policy shall be subject to review procedures authorized by the Board of Regents’ Policy on Application for Discretionary Review.

An appeal to the Board of Regents shall not defer the effective date of the adverse action against the student organization pending the Board’s review unless the Board so directs. Any such stay or suspension by the Board shall expire as of the date of the Board’s final decision on the matter.
