Chemistry

Hometown: Leesburg, Georgia

Graduating: Spring 2024

Why did you choose to attend GSW?
GSW’s programs provided me with the educational background along with the community involvement I needed to achieve my goals. This institution felt like a great place to develop lifelong connections and pursue my undergraduate degree. The chemistry program that GSW provided was where I saw my future. Also, the University was not far from my hometown, so I could stay close to my family.

Please list your University highlights, achievements, leadership and awards.

  • GSW Marshal (1 year)
  • GSW Chemistry Club; Vice President (2 years)
  • Tutor and Teaching Assistant (1 year)
  • GSW Tutor of the Year for 2023
  • Dean’s List (2 semesters)
  • President’s List (2 semesters)
  • American Chemical Society Southwest Georgia Outstanding Chemistry Student 2023

Are you currently receiving any GSW scholarships? If so, which one(s)?
I'm currently receiving the Southwestern Promise, L.R. Townson, and Wysochansky scholarships, which I am deeply grateful for.

Why did you choose your major, or what do you love about your major program at GSW?
I chose to become a chemistry major after I discovered my love for research and the desire to know more about how we can manipulate the physical world. Chemistry is a field which drives me to expand upon my knowledge and apply it in multiple areas. GSW’s Chemistry program has provided me with an excellent educational experience inside and outside of the classroom that shaped me into a better person.

What is a cause you’re passionate about?
Environmental education and encouraging people to help maintain a clean, safe environment is something I am very passionate about. Educating our community, future generations, friends, and family on the ways to safeguard our environment is one of my lifelong goals that I will always strive to achieve.

What have you learned from other GSW students?
During my 4 years here at GSW, I have learned many lessons from fellow students. The most important being that we all come from different backgrounds and have different ways of life. I have discovered that people have more in common with others than they believe.

What is your plan after graduation?
After graduation I plan to attend a graduate program to receive my Ph.D. in Chemistry. Furthering my education will allow me to pursue my career and life goals while providing me with a high level of understanding in the field.

What advice do you have for incoming students?
My advice to incoming students is to develop a good academic relationship with your professors and advisors. Developing academic relationships while at GSW will benefit you greatly throughout your time as an undergraduate. Also, do not be afraid to explore your academic interests. Study what you love and find your niche.

What is your favorite class and why?
My favorite current class is Advanced Topics in Inorganic Chemistry. It answers so many questions that I have after my previous Inorganic class and builds upon my foundational knowledge of the subject.

What is your favorite place to eat, shop, or hang out in Americus?
Sweet Georgia Bakery is my favorite place to eat in Americus. They have a great selection of food, and I never leave disappointed. It’s a great place to grab a bite with friends or relax after classes.

What is your favorite album? Why?
As of right now my favorite album is "Nola" by the band DOWN. It is always in my rotation for trips, studying, and cleaning. I am a fan of all genres, but I always come back to this album for some reason. I think it’s the gritty, raw musical composition that I connect with. I enjoy music with a lot of energy and this album has it.
