Mary's nominator said:
Mary is a good student and great representative of the exercise science program at GSW. After completing her practicum experience for Exercise Science, her preceptor, Patrick Gay, and his team at Phoebe Sumter Physical Therapy were happy to have her return this semester to work her internship hours. Dr. Gay said, "Mary is a vibrant addition to the clinic. Our patients love her. She's responsible, professional, and punctual. She is a team player who gets along with everyone and has a genuine compassion for our patients."

Why did you choose to attend GSW?
I chose to attend GSW for the community. The small campus makes it easy to connect with students and professors alike. You really get to build genuine connections with the people around you.

Please list your University highlights, achievements, leadership and awards.

  • President’s List (1 semester)
  • Dean’s List (2 semesters)
  • Academic Achievement List (2 semesters)
  • Practicum and internship at Phoebe Sumter Physical Therapy

Why did you choose your major, or what do you love about your major program at GSW?
I chose exercise science because I thought that it would be a good gateway into a physical therapy program. GSW’s program has amazing professors who are always around to help if you need it. They work hard to prepare you for whatever path you decide to go on in the future.

What’s your favorite spot on campus and why?
I love to go to Canes Central. It’s a great place to study, hang out with friends, and socialize with other students. My friends and I go there all the time to take breaks in between classes.

What is your plan after graduation?
I will be attending Brenau University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program this summer after graduation! I’ve only gotten this far because of GSW and the amazing professors who taught me everything that I needed to know.

What advice do you have for incoming students?
Take time for you! Studying is important, but studying too much can cause you to burn out. Take time to hang out with your friends, go outside, and do the things that you enjoy!

What makes GSW special?
The community is amazing. Everyone is so easy to talk to, and they treat you like family. It really makes you feel at home.

What would people be surprised to know about you?
I am a singer! I sing for my local church every other Sunday. I’ve also sung at weddings and different events within my community. It’s one of my favorite things to do.

What’s something on your bucket list?
I would love to travel across Europe. Getting to see the different cultures and sites of different countries would be an amazing experience. Hopefully, I can check this off my bucket list in the future!
