Psychology

Hometown: Ellaville, Georgia

Major: Recent Psychology graduate

Graduated: May 2022

Why did you choose to attend GSW?
After graduating with my associate's degree from South Georgia Technical College in May 2020, I knew that I wanted to pursue a degree in Psychology. I felt like GSW was the perfect place to do this because I heard from previous students how much they loved the Psychology program. GSW is also very close to home, so I was able to have my friends, family, and church support me throughout my years of undergrad here.

Please list your University highlights, achievements, leadership and awards.

  • President’s List, 1 semester
  • Dean’s List, 2 semesters
  • Academic Achievement List, 1 semester
  • Work-study student in the Office of Accommodations and Access, 1 year
  • Excellence in Psychology Award (May 2022)
  • Bachelor of Arts in psychology from GSW, cum laude (May 2022)

Who is your favorite professor or staff member? Why?
I would say Dr. Gary Fisk is my favorite professor I have had at GSW. I had a rough time transitioning into my first semester at GSW because of all the changes in my life at the time. Yet every time I walked into Psychological Statistics, I came out smiling because of one of his jokes. Plus, he made me think math was fun, which is hard to do, so there is that.

What is your plan after graduation?
I am going a different route and taking a gap year to attend a Bible Study program called Kanakuk Institute in Missouri for 8 months and then I will attend Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) in Texas to get my master’s in Biblical counseling. This is possible because I was accepted into DTS, and they are allowing me to defer for a year (thank you, Jesus). I am excited to enjoy my summer working, and spending time with friends and family until I move to Missouri in September.

What advice do you have for incoming students?
To future students, I want to say take it one day at a time. Please do not think you have to have it all figured out because it will just take away from the joy of being in college. Yes, you should work hard and dedicate your time to your studies, but this does not mean you have to run yourself into the ground. Focus on what you can do in just that day. Every day will look different. Do that one assignment, have lunch with your friend, hug that person, and do one thing for yourself. If you focus on what you can do on that day you can live a life full life that you enjoy!

What is a cause you are passionate about?
I am passionate about sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others. I want people to know that they are loved by a God who calls them fearfully and wonderfully made and that they are loved more than they could ever know. I hope my life shows evidence of that.

What would people be surprised to know about you?
I love sharks! I know, weird, right? People are terrified of them, but I just am fascinated by them. I hope to swim with some one day!

What is your favorite series? Why?
My favorite series to binge watch is NCIS. The reason being is it is something my mom and I would always watch together. Every weekend when I was younger, we would have a marathon. So now when I watch it, I feel nostalgic.
