Family Programs

Georgia Southwestern supports collaboration between parents and families and the University for the common goals of student learning, development, and success. We encourage you as parents and family members to explore the many ways you can become engaged on campus. There are various opportunities to connect such as through the GSW Parent’s Group on Facebook, at Family Weekend, and Homecoming Weekend.

Family Weekend

Each fall, we celebrate being a Hurricane by welcoming parents, siblings, and loved ones to discover more about your student's life here at Georgia Southwestern. As part of the Hurricane family, we invite you to experience everything our campus and community has to offer, from athletics and the arts to trolley rides and recreation. We also invite you to explore the Americus and Sumter County area together as we have many unique shops and restaurants, in addition to two state parks. Family Weekend will culminate at the end of GSW’s Blue & Gold Week, a fall spirit week.

Supporting My Student

At Georgia Southwestern, we encourage family supports to encourage their student while studying at their home away from home. Some of the most helpful ways to support may include the following:

  • Encourage connection with other GSW students, faculty, and staff. Networking opportunities are in abundance throughout the term.
  • Allow your student to take ownership and academic responsibility for their educational career in order to succeed in the classroom and prepare for life after graduation.
  • Prepare for the financial obligations of attending college and understand the resources offered. Educate yourself to assist your student with understanding.

Supporter FAQs

How can I assist in ensuring the successful transition of my student to GSW?

Always encourage your student to make connections at GSW while taking ownership of their educational career. You can review the student and academic support services readily available through the Division of Student Engagement and Success.

How is Academic Advising Completed each semester?

Students are expected to take primary and increasing responsibility for your academic decisions. However, Academic Advising is offered throughout the term and required each semester.

What is the emergency notification policy for students and supporters?

Students are encouraged to update their emergency notification contact each term. It is the student's responsibility to update this contact for accuracy. Students have the ability to add multiple telephone numbers to receive emergency notifications. However, only the student will have this ability.

If you are interested in receiving emergency notifications, please talk with your student and ask them to add your contact via Rain. Students can update information using the following instructions.

I chose to attend GSW because of the prestigious academic programs, as well as the family atmosphere on campus.
