GSW Homecoming and Family Weekend festivities kick off Sept. 19-24

AMERICUS, GA (September 16, 2022) — Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) will celebrate Homecoming, which made its return to the fall, during the week of Sept. 19-24, culminating with Family Weekend.

GSW alumni, families, friends and members of the community are invited to attend all weekend events starting Thursday, Sept. 22 with a Homecoming Concert featuring Cupid, the king of all line dances with his ever-familiar Cupid Shuffle. The concert, which starts at 7:30 p.m., will also feature R&B artists T-Royal, Mr. Phat, and GSW students Isaiah Dunschee and Justin Smith.

Friday’s events on Sept. 23 include Golf at Griffin Bell for GSW alumni and families at a special discount rate and will conclude with Hurricane Happy Hour from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Wheatley Administration Building.

Homecoming and Family Weekend activities will culminate in a busy Saturday, Sept. 24. The Canes Family Brunch, held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Wheatley Administration Building, invites GSW alumni and families to a free brunch. Following the brunch, attendees may Paint, Play, or Par – paint a wooden door hanger, explore Downtown Americus and Sumter County, and enjoy another round of golf at Griffin Bell at a special discount rate.

Newly refreshed this year is the Homecoming Tailgate – a true tailgate experience. Starting at 4:00 p.m., the Tailgate will take place between the soccer and softball fields on GSW’s campus ahead of the soccer games. Alumni, families, organizations and businesses are invited to set up their own tailgate space - complete with tents, chairs, grills, food and drinks. Tailgaters are encouraged to reserve their space online. There will be a DJ, inflatables for kids, face painting, Surge's Food Truck, Kona Ice and so much more.

Women’s Soccer will take on Lander University starting at 5:00 p.m. and Men’s Soccer will start at 7:30 p.m., with free admission to both games. Former GSW Homecoming Kings & Queens from 1963-2022 are invited back and will be recognized at halftime of the women’s game, and the 2022 Mr. & Miss GSW will be crowned during halftime of the men’s game.

Homecoming week will officially kick off for students Monday evening with the announcement of Class Representatives by the Student Government Association followed by a Golf Cart Parade. Students will also enjoy a Glow Night, Think Fast Game Show, Wednesday Night Lights with Intramural Football, Blue & Gold Picnic, and The Surge: Storm the Field.
