Scholarship microMicrobiology textbook released

The Microbiology textbook in which Dr. Anh-Hue Tu is one of the senior contributing authors is now published.  The book presents the core concepts of microbiology with a focus on applications for careers in allied health. The pedagogical features of the text make the material interesting and accessible while maintaining the career-application focus and scientific rigor inherent in the subject matter. Microbiology’s art program enhances students’ understanding of concepts through clear and effective illustrations, diagrams, and photographs.

Microbiology is produced through a collaborative publishing agreement between OpenStax and the American Society for Microbiology Press. The book aligns with the curriculum guidelines of the American Society for Microbiology.  The book will be accessible for free through this link below. A hard copy can be purchased for $55.  It will be in partnership with the American Society for Microbiology and can be downloaded internationally. It is geared toward nursing and allied health students but is complex enough to be used for students majoring in microbiology also.

Scholarship GaoliMeet GSW's visiting scholar Gao Li

The Office of International Programs at GSW greatly enjoyed and benefited from having Gao Li as a visiting scholar with us this fall from early August, 2016 through this fall semester, 2016.  Ms. Gao interacted with our campus community a great deal, especially with the faculty and students in the GSW School of Business.  She attended classes of Dr. Philip Szmedra (Macro Economics) and Ms. Qiang Wang (Finance) , and made an excellent presentation for Dr. Wang’s on Nov. 9, 2016  “China's Financial System and Cultures”  in the class of Dr. Wang. Gao also participated in our “World Café” on Sept. 28, sharing cultural information about China with our U.S. students as part of a larger round table program where students and scholars from many countries shared with U.S. students about their cultures and perspectives.

“This semester’s visit to GSW has been a precious time of my life,” she said. “I was very honored to have made a presentation to Dr. Wang’s students at GSW.  Additionally, there were many activities of cultural exchange offered by GSW’s Office of International Program and the ELI that I loved attending and getting to know different cultures, as well as sharing the Chinese culture with others.”

Gao’s hosts thoroughly enjoyed having her on our campus, and GSW would be honored to host more scholars in the future of Gao’s high caliber.

Scholarship LauraBauerBauer honored by alma mater

Laura Bauer, director of National Initiatives at the Rosalynn Carter Institute, was recently highlighted in the Columbus State University Graduate School Newsletter. Bauer is an alumna of Columbus State University’s Master in Public Administration program and has worked for the RCI for the past 18 ½ years.

Bauer was a non-traditional student when she received her MPA. She offered great advice to CSU graduate students regarding their goals. “Never sell yourself short,” she said. “It had been 17 years since I’d last been in college when I went back, first to finish my undergraduate degree in Psychology, then straight on through the MPA program. Stay focused on your goals and do not allow personal or work challenges to keep you from crossing the finish line. In all things, perseverance is vital. Get the nay-sayers out of your life, and surround yourself with people who support you and genuinely want to see you succeed.”
