Regents Approve 8 Percent Budget Reduction
New mandatory student fees included |
|
The University System of
Georgia Board of Regents today approved plans to adjust the System’s budget from a six percent reduction ($135 million) to an eight percent reduction level, ($176 million) for the current fiscal year (FY2010). The Board’s actions call for new reductions to the System’s 35 public colleges and universities as well as implementing an additional mandatory student fee.
The new mandatory fee for GSW students will be $150.

Regents Approve Revised Core Curriculum for University System
|
|
The University System of Georgia’s (USG) governing body, the Board of Regents, took a step today to revise the core undergraduate curriculum. The regents approved a revised core curriculum, the basic courses all students must take in order to earn a degree, in order to help students complete their majors in a timely way, strengthen the focus on liberal arts, preserve the ability of students to transfer courses across institutions, and boost the assessment of student learning. The new core will go into effect in the fall of 2011.

The Medical College of Georgia has received a two-part gift just under $1.3 million from the Helene Fuld Health Trust to expand nursing education in Georgia. A $1.1 million component of the gift, given over three years, allows MCG's School of Nursing to partner with the nursing schools at Georgia Southwestern State University and Macon State College to expand the clinical nurse leader program.

“Coach” is stepping down after 29 years in collegiate athletics. President Kendall A. Blanchard, Ph.D. today announced that Randolph Barksdale is resigning as Georgia Southwestern State University’s athletic director. Associate Athletic Director Jaclyn Kaylor is stepping in as GSW’s new AD. Kaylor will assume responsibility of her new position on November 17.

Denham family forms GSW athletic scholarship

The Georgia Southwestern
Foundation is pleased to announce the formation of the Mike and Carol Denham
Family Scholarship. This scholarship, when fully endowed, will provide a
scholarship in support of athletics at GSW. The Denham family has played a
large role in support of athletics and other endeavors at GSW for many years.
Mike has been a member of the Board of Trustees at Georgia Southwestern for 10
years and both he and Carol are active members of the community.

Board of Regents Approves Budget Reduction Plans for Campuses

The University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents approved today the Fiscal Year 2009 six percent budget reduction amounts for the 35 System institutions. Previously at its August meeting, the regents had approved overall budget reduction amounts for the System, along with a System FY2010 budget request.

GSW begins making way for new residence hall
|
|
Construction workers began demolition of
Complex III on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The Georgia Southwestern residence hall was constructed at a cost of $1.1 million in 1970. The
new suite-style, 300-bed, upperclassmen residence hall (name to be determined)
going up in its place will cost an estimated $14 million to complete with
payment coming through a bond issue. As part of Georgia Southwestern’s
sustainability initiative, brick, block and concrete rubble from the demolition
will be used as filler for the new construction site.

Green receives KCACTF Teaching Artist award
|
|
Jeff Green, associate
professor of theater and chair of the Department of Dramatic Arts at Georgia
Southwestern, has just been chosen as the Region IV recipient of the Teaching
Artist Award for 2008 by the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival
(KCACTF). This regional award is given in appreciation of Green’s reputation and
achievement as a teacher and as an artist and in recognition of his record of
dedication to KCACTF. Region IV includes 10 southeastern states Puerto Rico and
the Virgin Islands.

School of Nursing, RCI awarded $763,000 from HRSA

|
GSW and the RCI have been awarded $763,914 to establish a Prescription for Academic Success program within the School of Nursing for students from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, including minority students. The funding comes from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Regents authorize Griffin Bell Golf Course naming
|
|
Today, in the second and final day of its August 2008 board meetings, the Board of Regents (BOR) of the University System of Georgia approved a number of requests from Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) President Kendall A. Blanchard, Ph.D.
In particular, the BOR authorized the naming of the Georgia Southwestern Golf Links in Americus and Conference Center the “Griffin Bell Golf Links and Conference Center” in recognition of former U.S. Attorney General, GSW graduate and Americus native Judge Griffin Bell.

University on track for record enrollment
|
|
The enrollment at Georgia Southwestern State University is on pace to reach a record high. As of the end of the day on Friday, August 15, 2804 students had enrolled. This is 399 or approximately 16 percent more students than were enrolled on the day of the final count in the Fall of 2007.

Record number of students in campus housing
|
|
Move-In Day 2008 was a busy one Sunday, August 10 as the residence halls at Georgia Southwestern welcomed a capacity and new record 804 students. This number is an improvement of more than 50 occupants from fall 2007 when Georgia Southwestern housed a then record 751 students.
