State funding for Health & Human Sciences Building delayed

Governor Sonny Perdue released his budget recommendations for the FY 2010 amended and FY2011 original budgets Friday, Jan. 15. In light of severe shortfalls in state revenue, capital construction funding for Georgia Southwestern State University's (GSW) anticipated Health and Human Science Building (HHSB) was not included in the recommendation for FY2011. More

Blanchard opens art exhibition Jan. 19

The Georgia Southwestern Foundation, Inc. held its fall full board meeting recently, and the Board of Trustees re-elected three current members to the 36 member group: Emory F. Parker, Jr., George H. Third World Studies meeting in Ghana makes history

The 27th annual meeting of the Association of Third World Studies (ATWS), Inc., was held at the Elmina Beach Resort in Cape Coast, Ghana Nov. 21-24. The conclave featured 100 attendees from around the world who participated in 18 panels and round table discussions that focused on the theme, “Celebrating Change, Defining the Future: Social Justice, Democracy and Cultural Revival.” More

National Quality Caregiving Network Announces 2009-11 Grantees

The National Quality Caregiving Network (NQCN), a partnership between Johnson & Johnson and the RCI, funds pilot projects that embed evidence-based caregiver programs in diverse and easily accessible community settings and delivery systems. Recently announced 2009-2011 grantees will receive $100,000 for a two-year period to help support this work. More

Garrison accepts post as Lagrange College VPAA

Lagrange College President Dan McAlexander yesterday announced that Dr. David Garrison was Lagrange’s new Vice President of Academic Affairs. Garrison served as Dean of Georgia Southwestern State University’s College of Arts and Sciences since August 2006. His new position begins Feb. 1. More

Regents Approve 8 Percent Budget Reduction
New mandatory student fees included

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents today approved plans to adjust the System’s budget from a six percent reduction ($135 million) to an eight percent reduction level, ($176 million) for the current fiscal year (FY2010). The Board’s actions call for new reductions to the System’s 35 public colleges and universities as well as implementing an additional mandatory student fee. The new mandatory fee for GSW students will be $150. More

GSW History Professor Richard C. Hall, Ph.D. is named recipient of the Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) 2009-2010 Featured Scholar Award.  The announcement was made today by President Kendall Blanchard. More

Americus to honor President Emeritus King

The 2009 nominees for the City of Americus'  Walk of Fame will be honored at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15 at the Rylander Theatre. Georgia Southwestern College President Emeritus William B. King, Ph.D., is one of six outstanding servants of this community to be honored.  More

Georgia Apply to College Week

This week, Nov. 2-6 is Georgia Apply to College Week. High school seniors are given the opportunity to apply to college using GAcollege411.org. Volunteers from Georgia colleges and universities, including Georgia Southwestern, are on hand to assist students as they complete their application. The focus is on providing assistance to first generation students as they navigate the college application process. More

2009 Student/Faculty Gap Analysis completed

Earlier this fall 363 Incoming Freshmen and 92 Faculty members participated in the inaugural "2009 Student/Faculty Gap Analysis."  This comprehensive survey project is designed to provide GSW students, faculty, staff, and administrators with an insightful comparison of student and faculty attitudes, beliefs, and opinions regarding a number of important educational, academic, and social issues. More

GSW hosts 1,000 students at Americus Probe Fair

The Georgia Southwestern Admissions Office hosted the Americus Probe Fair Tuesday, Nov. 3 in the Student Success Center. Over 1,000 high school juniors and seniors attended from Americus-Sumter High School, Southland Academy, Marion County High School, Macon County High School, Dooly County High School, Webster County High School, Fullington Academy in Pinehurst, Crisp Academy in Cordele, and the Deerfield Windsor School in Albany.  More

GSW, GPC partner for Honors Program agreement

Earlier this fall Georgia Perimeter College and Georgia Southwestern State University signed an articulation agreement allowing students in the Honors Program at Georgia Perimeter to be admitted seamlessly into Georgia Southwestern's Honors Program. Local chemists donate resource book for National Chemistry Week

Harold Isaacs, Ph.D., professor emeritus of history at Georgia Southwestern, has edited “Third World Problems and Issues: Past and Present,” the Fall 2009 issue of the “Journal of Third World Studies," published by the Association of Third World Studies. More

State’s first Professional Golf Management Program coming to GSW in 2010

Georgia’s first Professional Golf Management Program will begin at Georgia Southwestern State University in Fall 2010. The announcement was made official today following final approval at yesterday’s GSW Academic Affairs Committee. More

Regents Approve Revised Core Curriculum for University System

The University System of Georgia’s (USG) governing body, the Board of Regents, took a step today to revise the core undergraduate curriculum. The regents approved a revised core curriculum, the basic courses all students must take in order to earn a degree, in order to help students complete their majors in a timely way, strengthen the focus on liberal arts, preserve the ability of students to transfer courses across institutions, and boost the assessment of student learning. The new core will go into effect in the fall of 2011. More

University continues international collaboration with Indian college

In keeping with its efforts of collaboration, Georgia Southwestern State University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recently with SEMCOM – Sardar English Medium College of Commerce and Management – located in India. More

Georgia Southwestern receives $25,000 AT&T Grant

Georgia Southwestern State University today announced that it has been awarded a $25,000 grant from AT&T Georgia to fund the LOTTS initiative (Learning Opportunities through Technology and Science) out of the Georgia Southwestern School of Computing and Mathematics. More

Georgia Southwestern State University, like all schools across the country, is addressing health concerns regarding flu outbreaks on their campuses. At Georgia Southwestern, there have been 9 cases of students with flu-like symptoms who have reported to Student Health Services, the primary point of contact for all students who are not feeling well. GSW enrollment soars over 3000

The enrollment at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) has reached another record high.  As of the end of the day on Friday, August 21, 3033 students had enrolled.  This is the first time that more than 3,000 students have been enrolled at GSW during any one semester. More

Freshman share first year experiences through Web blogs

Beginning Thursday, August 20, six freshman at Georgia Southwestern State University have agreed to share their first year experiences on the University's website through a series of blogs. From student life to study hall, these first year students will offer words of wisdom to prospective students and interesting anecdotes to whoever happens to visit the site. More

Residence hall ribbon cutting Aug. 14

In just under seven months, Georgia Southwestern State University has completed its newest residence hall, Magnolia. This is GSW’s third newly constructed residence hall within the last four years. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for Friday, August 14 at 1:30 p.m. to commemorate the occasion. Magnolia is located on Perimeter Road behind the GSW Education Center. More

Regents Honor Guaranteed Tuition for Current Students; End Guarantee for Incoming Freshmen

School of Business earns AACSB International business accreditation

GSW history books available in bookstore

In 2006, retired Georgia Southwestern State University veteran, Mildred Tietjen, authored GSW’s centennial coffee table book titled “A Century of Achievement.” The 151-page hardback chronicles GSW’s progression from a small agricultural school to a growing state university. Copies of the book are available in the GSW Bookstore at a cost of $39.95. More

President Carter throws first pitch in baseball series win

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter threw out the first pitch - a strike - prior to Georgia Southwestern's baseball double-header with Georgia College and State University on Saturday, Mar. 7. GSW sophomore pitcher and Plains native Bud Fuller, Carter's great nephew, handed the former president the ball and received the pitch behind home plate. More

Georgia Southwestern State University now offers a convenient way for donors to make charitable gifts online via credit card. A website hosted by Blackbaud, the University’s donor database provider, can be accessed from the GSW home page; it is totally secure; and each electronic gift is transferred seamlessly to GSW’s donor database. University breaks ground on new residence hall

Georgia Southwestern State University marked the beginning of a new, 300-bed student housing project. Scheduled for completion in August 2009, this three-story, 88,200 square foot facility will offer suite-style living accommodations for upperclassmen and will be located behind the Education Center. Nursing students learn cultural and diversity issues

A cultural competence training experience was provided for every student in the Georgia Southwestern School of Nursing Friday, Jan. 9. Training was funded by a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant which focuses on cultural diversity in the nursing workforce.More

Regents approve ground lease and rental agreement for new GSW student housing

Georgia Southwestern is one step closer to constructing a new, 300 bed residence hall on the former site of Complex III. On Monday, Nov. 10, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved the ground lease and rental agreement for Georgia Southwestern’s planned new student housing. The next phase involves acquiring proper financing for the project. More

Barksdale steps down as GSW AD, Kaylor appointed successor

“Coach” is stepping down after 29 years in collegiate athletics. President Kendall A. Blanchard, Ph.D. today announced that Randolph Barksdale is resigning as Georgia Southwestern State University’s athletic director. Associate Athletic Director Jaclyn Kaylor is stepping in as GSW’s new AD. Kaylor will assume responsibility of her new position on November 17. More

Denham family forms GSW athletic scholarship

The Georgia Southwestern Foundation is pleased to announce the formation of the Mike and Carol Denham Family Scholarship. This scholarship, when fully endowed, will provide a scholarship in support of athletics at GSW.  The Denham family has played a large role in support of athletics and other endeavors at GSW for many years. Mike has been a member of the Board of Trustees at Georgia Southwestern for 10 years and both he and Carol are active members of the community. More

Board of Regents Approves Budget Reduction Plans for Campuses

The University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents approved today the Fiscal Year 2009 six percent budget reduction amounts for the 35 System institutions. Previously at its August meeting, the regents had approved overall budget reduction amounts for the System, along with a System FY2010 budget request. More

GSW begins making way for new residence hall

Construction workers began demolition of Complex III on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The Georgia Southwestern residence hall was constructed at a cost of $1.1 million in 1970. The new suite-style, 300-bed, upperclassmen residence hall (name to be determined) going up in its place will cost an estimated $14 million to complete with payment coming through a bond issue. As part of Georgia Southwestern’s sustainability initiative, brick, block and concrete rubble from the demolition will be used as filler for the new construction site. More

Fisk article featured in LabMedicine

Georgia Southwestern Psychology Professor Gary Fisk, Ph.D. recently authored an article discussing the use of animation in forensic pathology. Mehaffy speaks at GSW Constitution Day event

What is the purpose of college? Well, according to George Mehaffy, vice president for leadership and change at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), its purpose is to “prepare the next generation of actively engaged citizens for democracy.” Mehaffy spoke Wednesday, Sept. 24 at a Georgia Southwestern convocation recognizing Constitution Day.More

Green receives KCACTF Teaching Artist award

Jeff Green, associate professor of theater and chair of the Department of Dramatic Arts at Georgia Southwestern, has just been chosen as the Region IV recipient of the Teaching Artist Award for 2008 by the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). This regional award is given in appreciation of Green’s reputation and achievement as a teacher and as an artist and in recognition of his record of dedication to KCACTF. Region IV includes 10 southeastern states Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. More

School of Nursing, RCI awarded $763,000 from HRSA

GSW and the RCI have been awarded $763,914 to establish a Prescription for Academic Success program within the School of Nursing for students from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, including minority students. The funding comes from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. More

Regents authorize Griffin Bell Golf Course naming

Today, in the second and final day of its August 2008 board meetings, the Board of Regents (BOR) of the University System of Georgia approved a number of requests from Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) President Kendall A. Blanchard, Ph.D. In particular, the BOR authorized the naming of the Georgia Southwestern Golf Links in Americus and Conference Center the “Griffin Bell Golf Links and Conference Center” in recognition of former U.S. Attorney General, GSW graduate and Americus native Judge Griffin Bell. University on track for record enrollment

The enrollment at Georgia Southwestern State University is on pace to reach a record high.  As of the end of the day on Friday, August 15, 2804 students had enrolled. This is 399 or approximately 16 percent more students than were enrolled on the day of the final count in the Fall of 2007. More

Record number of students in campus housing

Move-In Day 2008 was a busy one Sunday, August 10 as the residence halls at Georgia Southwestern welcomed a capacity and new record 804 students. This number is an improvement of more than 50 occupants from fall 2007 when Georgia Southwestern housed a then record 751 students. More
