GSW to offer 4-year education degree at ABAC Fall 2008

Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) have once again combined efforts to offer four-year degrees. Beginning Fall 2008, GSW will offer a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education on the ABAC campus in Tifton. MORE

Students finish chapter at GSW

Friday, May 9, marked a pivotal day in the lives of 220 Georgia Southwestern State University students. It was spring commencement in GSW’s Student Success Center. Following a greeting from Regent Doreen Stiles Poitevint and a reflection from Elizabeth Kuipers, Ph.D., University of West Georgia President Beheruz N. Student-athletes recognized at spring banquet

he Georgia Southwestern State University Department of Athletics honored its student-athletes Monday, April 28 at the spring athletic banquet in the Storm Dome on the campus of GSW.  Andrew Whiggum (baseball) was named Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, while Kassi Reneau (softball) was named Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.   MORE

Beginning with the 2008 fall semester, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and Georgia Southwestern State University will expand their joint Bachelor of Business Administration degree by adding a major in Resource Management on the ABAC campus. MORE

GSW expands options for B.S. in Information Technology

As businesses of all sorts begin to rely more and more on technology, Georgia Southwestern is planning to expand the Bachelor of Science degree in information technology to include options in professional writing and multimedia. The new degree options will be available fall 2008. MORE

New GSW scholarship spreads awareness about meningitis, fallen Hurricane

Sunday, April 20, 2008 marks the 10 year anniversary of Evan Bozof’s death due to meningococcal meningitis. To celebrate his life and memory and to create awareness for a dangerous disease that can be prevented, a scholarship at Georgia Southwestern State University was recently endowed in his name. MORE

School of Business Administration aiming for additional accreditation

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International’s Initial Accreditation Committee met Monday, April 15 in Honolulu, Hawaii. At the meeting, the Committee granted Georgia Southwestern State University’s peer review team approval to give the School of Business’ undergraduate and graduate programs a one-year deferral for accreditation. GSW SIFE team partners with Brazilian University

Georgia Southwestern State University’s SIFE team traveled to Teresina, Brazil in early April to complete its first international project in collaboration with Centro De Ensino Unificado De Teresina (CEUT), a University in Brazil, and their SIFE team. MORE

GSW, Waycross College sign transfer agreement

Georgia Southwestern President Kendall A. Blanchard signed a Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) Monday, April 15 with Waycross College President David Palmer in Columbus amidst the April Board of Regents meetings. This is the sixth TAG agreement that Georgia Southwestern has signed since August 2007. MORE

43rd edition of GSW literary & visual arts magazine released

“Sirocco,” Georgia Southwestern State University’s magazine of literary and visual art, is published in April of each year by students at the institution. The 2008 edition, “Scaling the Whirlwind,” marks the 43rd edition of the work and is dedicated to GSW President Emeritus William H. Capitan and his wife Dolores. A reading and reception celebrating the release of this year’s edition was held Wednesday, April 16 in the James Earl Carter Library. MORE

Isaacs edits Third World journal

Harold Isaacs, Ph.D., professor emeritus of history at the University, has edited “Development Strategies: Struggles for Peace, Justice, and Democracy,” the Spring 2008 issue of the Journal of Third World Studies, published by the Association of Third World Studies. MORE

Wheatley Hall receives statewide award from Georgia Trust for historic preservation

The Wheatley Administration Building at Georgia Southwestern State University, received an award for Excellence in Rehabilitation from The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation at its Annual Meeting April 5 in Columbus. Built in 1918 on the third district Agricultural and Mechanical School campus, now the Georgia Southwestern campus, The Wheatley Administration Building was named after, Charles Huntington Wheatley.   MORE

University recognized by state of Georgia as environmental leader

The Pollution Prevention Assistance Division (P²AD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources recognized Georgia Southwestern State University as an environmental leader at a ceremony earlier today. GSW was recently accepted into P²AD’s Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia at the Silver level. They are committed to protecting and preserving Georgia’s environment. GSW joined 143 other organizations that have already committed to environmental leadership via the program. MORE

Bell named to Regents Hall of Fame

Saturday, March 29 was a proud day for Georgia Southwestern State University. At a banquet in Atlanta’s Hyatt Regency Hotel, the University System of Georgia Foundation named former U.S. Attorney General and GSW alumnus Griffin B. Bell (’36), right, to the Regents Hall of Fame. MORE

Fathi recognized for internationalization efforts

Adler appointed GSW vice president of academic affairs

Georgia Southwestern President Kendall A. Blanchard, Ph.D., today announced that Brian U. Adler, Ph.D., dean of the graduate school at Valdosta State University, has been named vice president of academic affairs and dean of the faculty. Following a nationwide search, Adler will replace Interim VPAA William L. Tietjen, Ph.D. Adler’s position will begin June 2008. MORE

Georgia Southwestern recently announced that it has selected the multi-modal communication service Connect-ED® from The NTI Group, Inc. to deliver time-sensitive notifications to students, faculty and staff within minutes. Central Bank of Georgia makes $110,000 donation to School of Business

Central Bank of Georgia in Ellaville recently pledged a donation of $110,000 over two years to Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW). Edwards campaign makes stop at GSW

Presidential candidate John Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, made a campaign stop at Georgia Southwestern State University Wednesday, August 29. GSW first institution offering Caregiving Certificate

In the fall of 2007, Georgia Southwestern will become the first university in the nation to offer a certificate program specifically focused on training leaders to overcome “the caregiving crisis” in America. The 18-credit Caregiving Specialist Certificate Program includes courses in psychology, nursing, special education and sociology, as well as a community practicum and leadership training.   MORE

GSW poised to start first PGM program in state

Seventeen, on the surface this number doesn’t mean much to most people, but to Georgia Southwestern it represents nationwide recognition, marketability and students, potentially 300 more students.There are only 17 colleges or universities in the U.S. with a Professional Golf Association accredited Professional Golf Management program. GSW would be the 18th and the only institution with such a program in the state. MORE

Easom returns to GSW as RCI Eminent Scholar, associate professor

Georgia Southwestern State University and the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving recently announced that Leisa R. Easom, R.N., Ph.D., former interim assistant dean and associate professor, has returned to Georgia Southwestern. She has been appointed to fill the Charles L. President Kendall A. Blanchard today announced that William L. Tietjen, Ph.D., professor emeritus of biology, has been named interim vice president of Academic Affairs (VPAA) and dean of faculty. This appointment comes after former VPAA Cathy L. Rozmus, DSN, accepted a position at the University of Texas Health and Science Center at Houston. MORE

'Canes hire men's soccer coach

Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) today announced that Warren Russ, former assistant soccer coach at the University of Central Florida (UCF) and the University of Georgia (UGA), has been appointed as head men’s soccer coach for the Hurricanes. Blanchard Named President at Georgia Southwestern

Dr. Kendall A. Blanchard was named today as president of Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) in Americus after the Board of Regents voted to make an exception in this case to its policy excluding the interim president of an institution from consideration as the permanent president. MORE

Inaugural class of GSW Accelerated BSN program graduates

Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) celebrated the inaugural graduating class of its Accelerated BSN degree program May 5, 2007. Nine nursing students successfully completed the fast track second-degree baccalaureate program designed for students who have a bachelor’s degree but not in nursing. The graduates were: Sulenia Bobb, Shawanda Griffin, Litonya Granville, Robert Kite, Megan McGorman, Connie Ozimba, Angela Randall, Jill Wiggins, and MariannaYinh. MORE

Kappa Delta donates to GSW CASA

Ashley Saint and representatives from the Delta Phi Chapter of Kappa Delta Sorority recently presented a check for over $1700 to LaVerne Worthy, co-director of Georgia Southwestern State University Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). The gift consisted of half the proceeds from the “Miss Americus 2007” pageant, sponsored by Kappa Delta. MORE

Hurricane Field illuminated

GSW Awarded Grant from Branan Foundation for Writing Center

The Mary Allen Lindsey Branan Foundation, administered by Wachovia Nonprofit & Philanthropic Services, recently awarded a grant to Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) in the amount of $10,000. The grant will help fund a proposed GSW Writing Center. The Center is designed to enhance the writing and comprehension skills of GSW students, most of whom reside in a 10-county region of Southwest Georgia, as well as strengthen their communication skills.
